Katie Jo was interviewed and played a live in-studio performance for The Grunion Gazette’s “Second Street Sessions” series!
We recently had the pleasure of meeting the beautiful and talented Katie Oberthaler of Katie Jo and The Mijos. Right before their set at Casa, a charming speakeasy in Costa Mesa, CA, we met up with Katie to talk about the band’s most recent EP, released days prior to meeting her, as well as many other topics. Katie’s passion for music and the band is so inspiring to us that we hope it inspires you to do what you love!
"For the last two years, Katie Jo & The Mijos continue to specialize in a sound that they lovingly refer to as bluegrass-infused California country with a Kansas kick. Based out of Long Beach and led by native Kansan, Katie Jo Oberthaler, Katie Jo & The Mijos are taking their two-step vibe to The Pike in Long Beach on Saturday, March 10 to celebrate the release of their debut EP, Prairie Flower."
If you don’t consider yourself a fan of country music, local band Katie Jo & The Mijos have a bone (and banjo) to pick with you. Assembled by Kansas-born front woman, banjo-ista and songwriter Katie Oberthaler, the six-person outfit plays “bluegrass-infused honky-tonk” for those who don’t know they like country music, yet.
"This Long Beach-based country honky-tonker adds a little bluegrass into her toe-tapping music." - Long Beach Press Telegram preview of the 2017 Long Beach Folk Revival Festival.
Our song "Crooked Lies" was selected for inclusion in the Long Beach Music Collective's Summer 2017 compilation, "Resist and Shout." The Long Beach Music Collective seasonal EPs feature songs from local artists around a central theme. "Crooked Lies" was selected from over 40 submissions, and the only country song to be featured on the compilation.
